New Orleans, LA - John Jacob Broders, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, died on May 30, 2026, at the age of 79, of pancreatic cancer.
Born in New Orleans on March 15, 1947, John spent his life deeply rooted in the city he loved. He was known for his sharp intellect, quiet wit, generous spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family. Whether sharing stories, offering thoughtful advice, or simply enjoying time with loved ones, John had a gift for making those around him feel valued and cared for.
John is survived by his wife of 35 years, Laura Comiskey Broders; their daughter, Gabrielle (Brandon Rogers), and their son, Hans Jacob. He is also survived by his brother, Leo Emmet "Buddy" Broders, Jr. (Kay Monroe), and sister, Jean Broders Murlin. In addition, John is survived by his extended family of numerous nieces and nephews (among them, his godchildren, Holly Carter Gordon, Victoria Gabrielle Roper, and Augusta Neville Bryan), cousins, in-laws, many dear friends, and all whose lives were enriched by his presence. John was predeceased by his parents, Leo Emmet Broders, Sr. and Frankie Mac Davis Broders, and his former wife, Diane Denton Broders.
John enjoyed a distinguished legal career spanning more than five decades as one of the nation's leading maritime attorneys. A graduate of St. Martin's Episcopal School, Tulane University, and Tulane University Law School, John built a respected practice in admiralty and maritime law as a partner at Jones Walker LLP in New Orleans. Throughout his career, he represented clients in complex matters involving marine finance, vessel construction, maritime transactions, marine insurance, and international shipping. He was widely recognized for his expertise, integrity, and sound judgment.
